Bring Your Pillow

January 14, 2010 · 6 comments

This week I’ve been spending a lot of time at the hospital with a friend who is going through a rough time.

It’s remarkable to see friends and family support each other.  People cry, people knit, people eat, people chat. We touch each other, we hug, we linger.

And sometimes, really late, people sleep.

I can’t help but notice how many people bring their own pillow. And that’s what I’m struck by.  When we settle into a place of the heart, a place where we are seriously committed to the long, dark night, we bring our own pillows.

Anything worth doing will almost surely come with a long night or two.

Do you have your pillow?

I might be reading too far into this, but I am trying to find a metaphor between bringing our pillow and making it through dark times in our life. Maybe something to do with rest and relaxation during times when we feel most overwhelmed?

@Steven – I think that’s part of it. We need rest. We need comfort. But I also think there are signs when we are really committed to something. The pillow is the metaphor for that commitment. Thanks for taking time to comment.

Laurie- I loved this post! You are so right. When you get you are exactly where you are supposed to you stop spending energy trying to “get it over with” and figure out how to be there fully and bring as much good stuff to the experience. Love it!-Patty

Mine is green and fuzzy and comes with a matching blanket. I’m sure I looked like Linus the last 2 weeks but that was not even on the radar screen. I was committed. To Steven’s point, that pillow/blanket helped me relax when I was most overwhelmed. In fact, I think I will go curl up with it now. Goodnight,
Tamara

@Patty – being there with the good stuff – yes!

@Tamara – Linus would be my pick in a crisis.
