Who Wants to Lick the Icing?

cupcake_oneMost blogs don’t survive to the one year mark. In fact most blogs – over 95% – are considered abandoned within four months (and it’s probably more like one month). But this one made it and today I’m officially sticking a candle in it and singing “Happy Birthday.”

But like any first year of life, there have been hard things to learn, personal doubt, lack of sleep and some spit-up… backlinks to the latter intentionally omitted!

Before I started blogging I read and read and read. I studied and studied and studied. I read hundreds of other blogs. I’m a fact finder – that’s what I do.

There IS a craft to blogging and I made sure that I understood the fundamentals before I jumped in. Within a few months, I turned all that I had learned into Bootcamp for Baby Bloggers, a class that I love teaching to others who want to save themselves the pain of muddling through as beginning bloggers.

But larnin’ ain’t doin’. Even with my thorough research, several things kept cropping up as my major challenges:

Challenge: What should I write about?
Always a red flag:  the word “should.” Whenever I wrote a post that I thought I should write, THUD. When I wrote something because it struck me as urgent or because I’d had a strong reaction to something… sweet. Patti Digh is a blogger whom I admire enormously. She said it best: Yearn to say something. That’s where I start each post now: where is that yearning and how can I give it some air?
Lesson: Go where the thrill is and you’ll have something to say that might even resonate with others.

Challenge: My brain can’t type on its own.
I found myself blogging in my head instead of at my keyboard. This method does NOT lead to posts – just sleepless nights. It leads to lots of frustration about all the heady ideas that never make into the dashboard of WordPress. The antidote for me is to use one of Linda Dessau‘s genius “idea catcher” tips and make sure that when I have a blog idea, I just start a draft post (or at least scratch it on the pad next to my bed). Or I use Jott to send myself an email via voicemail when I feel inspired. It’s like putting on my sneakers to go for a walk – opening that file to start a post is the hardest part. But when I see all those twinkly drafts and idea seeds ready for a few hundred more words, it’s much easier to open the flow.
Lesson: Have a system for capturing ideas when you have them. A system that supports easy conversion into posts is even better.

Challenge: Publish on a consistent schedule.
I’ve failed miserably at this one. A year ago, I had wild ambitions of posting at least twice a week… then once a week… yikes. Did. Not. Happen. I only had ambitions – not a strategy. I only said I wanted to blog once a week. I never said I would. I didn’t commit. I wouldn’t let a client off the hook like that – why myself? My role model for this challenge is Michele Woodward. She publishes her blog/newsletter every Sunday, no matter what. My Sundays wouldn’t be the same without her visiting my inbox. Her commitment means something to me and now I’m stepping up, too.
Lesson: Be realistic but be committed. Pick a day of the week for posts to go live. No matter what.

I’ll go on record now – it’s gonna be Thursdays in 2010. There might be other days when inspirations strike. But Thursdays – watch out!

Are you toddling as a blogger? What are your challenges? What have you learned from meeting them head-on?

‘Til Thursday. :-D

That’s a great idea, Laurie!! I have a folder of positive comments, but I don’t always think to look at it for inspiration when I’m working on new posts (or a blank screen, as the case may be). Now you’ve inspired me :)

Laurie, this post couldn’t have come at a better time for me.

I have a brand new personal blog that launched on New Year’s Day. Like all infants, it hasn’t yet found a voice or determined what it wants to be when it grows up. But the advice you have laid out here–your own and some from others we both admire–will surely help my blog find its way.

Another friend, Jonathan Fields, recommended today that I always write with a smile on my face. And I plan to do that. Except when I am angry. Or when Jeanne-Claude dies, as she did. Or when I am laughing instead of smiling.

Thank you so much for your honesty. And your encouragement.

And, Happy Birthday!

@Linda – I haven’t started printing them out and pasting them over my desk yet but I’m not saying it won’t happen!

@Kay – BEST news I’ve heard all year: YOU with a personal blog. I will be laughing, I’m sure.

Laurie, for someone who labels herself a fact-finder, you have done a whole lot of “jumping in” this year, and it’s an inspiration. You’ve tweaked your methods as you went along, rather than never starting at all, and that has been such a good example for me.

“Go where the thrill is” is a motto I’ll be taking into not only my blogging, but into my life as well….excellent advice!

Hey Laurie,

Congratulations. You have made your commitment to yourself here. I am looking forward to Thursdays. I know that having an absolute deadline makes me get my job done. Since I have guests and my radio show time for Fridays, I get those books read, outlines done and do the interview. Otherwise, I would just have a bunch of books by my bedside collecting dust. Now to make that commitment for my blog posts also.

Thanks for the great resources in your posts. I totally understand your typing in your head and not on your keyboard. I too have that syndrome.

Happy Birthday! As someone who has been blogging for about 90 days, I relate to everything you mentioned. I know your pain and can feel your joy in every word you write. You are wise and I appreciate your lessons learned– they will help keep me on the straight and narrow. How about we make a date to meet right back here this time next year so I can help you blow out the candles on year 2?

Congrats!

Yay! Happy Birthday, Bloggy!

I love these ideas… knowing when to follow the “how to blog” rules, and when to make my own is *such* a challenge. And generally if I try to follow someone else’s rules, all of my ideas tend to dry up. So I love the “write about what you yearn to say” advice. And when I follow it, I definitely need my idea catcher handy =)

@Lori – Thank you!

@Desiree – Have I been under a rock? Your new blog is GORGEOUS! Yes to that date.

@Briana – Love the sound of “Bloggy” :-) Let’s bust those blog rules, shall we? Thanks for dropping by.

Dear Laurie,

Thank you so much for the inspiration and happy blog birthday to you. Laurie, I love the look and feel of your blog and this post was exactly what I needed to move me to recommit to steppin’ it up myself and go back to daily blogging. (well almost)

My blog is just about 5 years old, and though it started out with a bang, during the past two years that I’ve been writing my book it began to show signs of whimpering due to my neglect. Now I’m ready to pick my baby back up and breathe new life into her.

I’m especially thankful to you for the reminder that by ‘shoulding’ on myself, I’ve been denying my readers the enjoyment of just getting to share whatever it is that’s on my mind that day. That’s what used to make it so much fun. Cheers to you for sharing these great insights. Happy Thursday — the new blog day!
